Greetings my people! Tomorrow, the 1st of July 2013, it’ll be 150 years ago that slavery was abolished in my motherland, Suriname. It’s actually my 2nd motherland because Africa is from where we originate as a people but we were stolen and brought with the merchantship into captivity in a strange land. And not until 1873, we were really free, as we were put to forced labour to ‘redeem’ the loss of capital by the slave masters. It still infuriates me and causes a holy anger within me to stir up inside of me…

As a free people I find it my honourable duty to remember my ancestors and how they stood strong during this 400 year intervention in the evolution of my African people. Before the slavery and long after that we have always been inventors, builders, architects, scientists and businesspeople, that creative force still exists and is carried on today like an estafet-baton.
To commemorate our liberty we’ll have a big celebration tomorrow in Amsterdam with several artists including Giovanca, the Metropole Orchestra, Izaline Calister and the world famous reggae band, Morgan Heritage as headliner amongst others. The Dutch vice prime-minister, Lodewijk Asscher and King Willem-Alexander the 4th of Orange and queen Maxima will also be present to honour our ancestors. I strongly hope that they will make use of the opportunity to officially apologize for the slave trade as King Willem’s forefather’s and the Dutch government were also involved in this negative page of history.
